Thai Cuisine with the Shangri-La

Back by popular request! Learn to cook popular Thai dishes that you may have thought were too complicated to recreate in your own kitchen. Watch the Shangri-la chefs use quick preparations like stir-frying, blanching, poaching and parboiling to emphasize the freshness of choice ingredients. Thai cuisine is well known for being hot and for its balance of five fundamental flavors in each dish (or the overall meal): spicy, sour, sweet, salty, and bitter. We will explore how to combine these elements to create tasty and colorful dishes like green chicken curry, deep fried prawns wrapped in egg noodles and pineapple fried rice. Coffee, tea and refreshments will be served, and we'll taste the chef's creations as the class progresses. Meet at the Lounge for registration and coffee/tea before going to the hotel's kitchen for our class

Growing up in Shanghai: A Talk with Gangfeng Wang

In 1981, with a second-hand camera and expired film, Gangfeng Wang set out to capture the everyday images of China that surrounded him. The subjects of those first photos were the people who lived in his Shikumen neighborhood. Gangfeng would explore, as an insider looking in, the everyday neighborhood life. The scenes he captured represented the daily ebb and flow of street life: a man reclining on a bamboo chair intently listening to his radio, a stream of cyclists waiting in the rain, a street dentist operating on a patient without pausing to note the camera capturing the moment. Photos such as these, which emphasize the beauty of street life in China, gained Gangfeng international recognition.

We're delighted to offer this chance to hear Gangfeng's informal talk about his early days in Shanghai in his own interesting home. Light refreshments will be served.

Date: Wednesday, March 18
Time: 9:30am registration; talk begins promptly at 9:45am

Historic Suzhou Creek Tour with Spencer Dodington

Join us on this tour, led by Spencer Dodington, to historic Suzhou Creek-one of Shanghai's Twelve Conservation Areas. Suzhou Creek was an important trade route since the 1930's, and a multitude of warehouses and factories were built along its banks. Originally, most of these old buildings were planned for demolition to enable new construction; however, due to initiatives by Shanghai's artists in the late 1990's, the riverside was designated as a protected heritage zone and many warehouses have been preserved. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. The walk will end at People's Square.
