For over ten years, Brian Linden and his wife have been pursuing their dream of becoming the first foreigners to restore and manage a collection of China’s national heritage sites. In 2006-2008, they worked with over 100 local Bai villagers and personally spearheaded all the construction and design work on their first project- The Linden Center. Their goal was to establish a more sustainable tourism model that would combine preservation and investment in the villagers’ economic and social well-being. That mission still guides them as they expand to numerous locations throughout Yunnan.
Since its founding, The Linden Centre has welcomed over 100,000 visitors to their three Dali heritage sites. In addition to award-winning boutique hotel experience, the Centre’s international education programs include semester-long research programs with Sidwell Friends, partnerships with Princeton-in-Asia, Indiana University, Middlebury, Shanghai American School, and regular conferences/workshops focusing on CSR, Environmental Studies, Photography, Plein Air, and Microfinance.
The Centre’s boutique hotels have consistently been ranked among Trip Advisor’s top hotels in China, and the Lindens have received the US Secretary of State’s Citation for Corporate Excellence, Travel and Leisure’s Global Vision Award, and the Yunnan Government’s Rainbow Award for Foreign Contributions to the Province.
Because the mission of social responsibility is unique in the hospitality field, China’s government has embraced this model and facilitated our growth via granting access to the most important cultural buildings and providing funding for each project.
Please come and hear their story about how and why they sold our home in America, home schooled their boys and invested their life savings in such a risky project. They will discuss their unique partnerships with the prefectural and county governments and the challenges of working in the southeast vestiges of the Himalayas.
