The team of Shanghai and Beyond will take us to Nanxun to learn about the Chinese New Year. In this small town setting, we will have the opportunity to celebrate and understand the customs of the Spring Festival.
An explanation of the holiday will be given at the Taoist Temple through activities and lecture. The tour will visit a retirement community where the seniors will share their festival stories of years gone by and we will participate in-group exercises with our new senior friends. In addition we will explore an ancient residence, the home of the “golden elephant”, where members will take part in a Kitchen God ceremony.
The tour will also witness a traditional meat-curing demonstration. Of course, we will enjoy customary Spring Festival cuisine at lunch including La Rou (salted meats that dry outside for months during the cold weather). The group will learn how to make Tangyuan, which is a traditional holiday dessert made with sticky rice and various fillings such as peanuts, black sesame, and red date.
Each component of the tour will be presented with historical background information and contemporary applications, giving you a deeper appreciation of the Chinese New Year. This is a unique opportunity to fully immerse yourself into the holiday.
