Royal Asiatic Society Library (CANCELLED)

Event Details

  • Date:

Unfortunately this event has been cancelled. The RAS library was founded in 1868 with Alexander Wylie’s collection of books. By 1937, the library’s immense collection was housed on the third floor of the RAS building, which is now the current Rockbund Art Museum. The library survived the Japanese occupation but was forced to close its doors in 1951. Most of the original collection has now been dispersed, but the library was re-established in 2007 by a group of Sinologists who believed in sustaining an English-language collection of books about China. The library operates on generous donations and is opened on select days by RAS volunteers. Julie Chun, who is the RAS Art Convener, RAS Council Member, and RAS library volunteer will host a casual library open house for SEA members.
