The manufacturing of porcelain got a very long history in China. The know-how to produce it – which was long unknown in Europe made it precious as gold reason why it was named the white gold of China. As Porcelain is linked to China it became the generic name of beautiful tableware in the Western world.
What is so special about porcelain? What’s the difference to pottery? The tour – guided by art historian Susanne Pohl – will lead us to the Ceramic Gallery of the Shanghai Museum with its rich collection of Chinese porcelain. We will learn about the complexity of the manufacturing process as well as about famous kilns and the specific styles of different dynasties: not everything is a Ming Vase!
