Old City – Laoximen Walk (SECOND DAY ADDED)

Event Details

Until 100 years ago, Shanghai ’s “Chinese City” was protected by a stone-and-earth wall and a moat, both since removed to make room for modern transportation. Little of the bustling old city remains, replaced by the gleaming skyscrapers that now dominate the city’s skyline. This walk is your chance to experience one of the last living neighborhoods within the “Old City,” to appreciate the unique charm of its late-19th and early-20th century lane homes, and to witness the demise of a nearby neighborhood in its final days. Your guide Patrick Cranley, president of Historic Shanghai, will facilitate discussion with residents about their attitudes regarding the old town’s transformation and what it means for their own families.
