Garden? Check. Water town? Check. Soup dumplings? Jackpot! Nanxiang is known as the home of the soup dumpling (xiaolongbao). Accessible by the metro, Nanxiang is a great introduction to all that defines Yangtze River culture. Guyi is one of Shanghai’s five classic gardens with waterways, pavilions, and a sanctuary for two gorgeous black cranes. Inscribed along the walls are quotations from legendary figures who inspired many generations. For lunch, we’ll feast on local delicacies, slurp xiaolongbao, and learn how experts judge the best dumplings. Then we will explore the Nanxiang history museum and the charms of this 1500-year-old water town.
