Park Lane, later called Nanking Road, was the “5th Avenue” of Shanghai, and together with the Bund, the capital of western power in colonial times. British traders sold western products while Chinese merchants tried to attain wealth selling Chinese goods. The first department stores of the world opened right here around 1910. This famous area is still glamorous today, especially at night. The side roads along this commercial hub, however, are most interesting. Colonial flair and Chinese traditions everywhere give a magical insight into this urban landscape. Carolin Billetter will lead us through the times and stories when Shanghai was becoming grand.
