On May 4, 1919 a student-led movement protesting the Treaty of Versailles resulted in a growing wave of social and literary creativity. At the same time, there was a growing interest in Communism, with its literature that could be understood by commoners. Many Shanghai writers poured out their hopes and dreams while living in relative secrecy in the affordable Hongkou district. Duolun Lu’s iconic cultural street, located in this district, showcases what this period meant to these young idealists. With Shanghai & Beyond as our guides, we’ll hear the stories of China’s most iconic ‘left-wing’ writers, be inspired by notable architecture, and test our knowledge of western writers, at scenic LuXun Park.
