Just beyond HuaiHai Lu’s sparkling retail mecca lies the home of Shanghai’s laobaixing, or common people. Our walk begins in a shikumen development that housed some famous personalities. From there our journey winds through upscale neighborhoods with breathtaking villas hidden among towering plane trees. Here Art Deco, Spanish Colonial, and English country style homes are restored to their former glory. We’ll zigzag through lilongs on obscure routes, and tour the former home of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the father of modern China. But let’s move beyond the dry political rhetoric and share stories of uprisings, kidnappings, and his surprising connections. Finally, enter a stunning new restoration, the former French Club. We’ll enjoy a tour of the building’s highlights while learning about its history and current usage.
