“Celebrate 10” is an art series that explores the various galleries in Shanghai that have sustained 10 years or slightly more. The art world is extremely competitive despite its outer veneer of beauty and culture. Throughout the series, Art Historian Julie Chun will take us to art galleries to discuss the challenges and the triumphs faced by the gallery owners and directors. How do they select artists? What has allowed some galleries to sustain while some have shut its doors? On March 9th, we will visit Gallery 55 and Vanguard Gallery – two small but astonishingly resilient galleries that have been able to withstand the fluctuating stylistic trends and economic upheavals as they strive to support young emerging Chinese artists. Afterwards, we will be treated to a nice cup of coffee and tea at a cool artistic cafe while we share our thoughts.
