Supporting your favorite artist means supporting the gallery where the artist is represented because much of the artist’s success depends on the symbiotic relationship with how the gallery can best support her/him. In the competitive art market, numerous galleries (both startups and world famous) have opened and closed in Shanghai. The “Celebrate 10” series created by the Art Historian Julie Chun, specifically for SEA, provides a closer look at the art galleries in Shanghai that have survived for at least 10 years. For this session, we will meet with Martin Kemble, Canadian founder of ART LABOR to discuss what it takes as a foreigner to sustain a gallery in Shanghai.
