Canton: The birthplace of colonialism in China

Event Details

  • Date:

Guangzhou, formerly called Canton, used to be the most important trading port between the western nations and China in colonial times, and it is still one of the major trading hubs today. It was also the place where China’s modern history began. Here, Sun Yatsen started his campaign against the imperial powers in Beijing and the era of a new and modern China. The western nations left their traces here as well, with colonial style buildings and their western life style. Carolin Billetter will lead us visually through Guangzhou’s narrow streets while we listen to the fascinating story of Canton and its important role for China´s historical development. While Guangzhou is part of the highspeed change in China, it kept his beautiful, chaotic atmosphere which you will capture in this talk about one of China´s hidden urban treasures.
