The area west of the former concessions used to be called “the Badlands” which was home to a broad spectrum of the Shanghai society. In the 1920s there lived wealthy Chinese trading families as well as newly rich foreigners. Famous schools and universities were situated in that area as well. In the 1940s the scene changed completely. Under the Japanese occupation countless casinos, bars, dance halls and brothels established there. Today, nothing of the latter can be found there. Moreover, the area reverts back to its former beauty. A stroll with Carolin Billetter along the western border of the former concessions will show the beautiful contrast of total urbanity and rural idyllic atmosphere.
