The area west of the former concessions, once known as the badlands, was home to a broad
cross section of Shanghai society. In the 1920s, many wealthy merchants frequented the area, however, the Japanese invasion in the 1940s changed it to an area known for its casinos, bars, dance halls, and brothels. Almost none of this history is evident today, having been replaced by the beauty and coziness of this tranquil part of the city. Please join Carolin Billetter, from Shanghai Art Walks & Talks, for a stroll through the western border of the former concessions to see the vestiges of history and enjoy the thrill of this constantly changing area.
