Shanghai Business Past and Present – From Opium War to the Wall Street of the East – A night time talk with Hartmut Oertel

Many places in Shanghai are a visible reminder of the business relations between China and the West in the 1920s and 30s. But that relationship goes back much further. At the very time when the French Revolution was getting underway in 1789, a revolution on world trade was beginning here in Shanghai. A new era of commerce began when the Catharina & Anna, one of the first trading ships arriving from the West, sailed down the Huangpu River with cargo from Hamburg. Shanghai Flaneur and SEA invite you to Hartmut Oertel's lecture about Shanghai's businesses. He tells stories of the city's trading past and how Shanghai has developed into what it is today. He will talk about Shanghai's prospects as the city moves towards the construction of China's first free port by the year 2020.

Hartmut Oertel has followed developments in China for the last 30 years. He first visited Shanghai in 1980, with the Cultural Revolution not long over and as one of the very few foreigners in the city. He studied Chinese language and history in Germany and China. After working in banking and business development, he is now a freelance consultant.

Dinner will be arranged in buffet style at Café "Sambal" which serves traditional Malaysian cuisine with a modern touch. It is perhaps one of the leading Malaysian restaurants in Shanghai.

Wine Seminar: Chardonnay

The SEA's series of small intimate wine tasting classes - led by sommelier and highly trained wine speaker, Mathieu Liard - continues this month. Each 90-minutes class focuses on the characteristics of a particular wine region or particular type of wine, its grape varieties, and history.

This month we'll talk about (and taste) wine made of Chardonnay grape. No other grape has shown such adaptability around the world – and such great results as well! It originates from the Burgundy wine region of eastern France but is now grown wherever wine is produced, from England to New Zealand. Its versatility makes it the most popular white wine in the world.

Mathieu will give us an overview of chardonnay wines, complete with flavor descriptions and food pairing options. You will find out how to choose a Chardonnay wine to suit your palate, your menu and your budget. During Mathieu's presentation, we will taste three wines. Light refreshments will be provided. These fun, intimate, and informative classes are an excellent way to expand your knowledge of wines from around the world.

Shanghai's Jazz Scene Past and Present – A night time walk with Andrew Field

Old Shanghai was the uncontested jazz capital of Asia, where musicians from the world over tested their musical mettle to the delight of enthusiastic audiences. In the colourful cabarets and sepia-lit dance halls of Old Shanghai, jazz music set a background score to a world of mobsters, adventurers and sing-song girls. This is a walk for music lovers where Shanghai Flaneur Andrew Field will talk about the history of modern and contemporary classical and jazz music in Shanghai. We begin with the Russian influence in Old Shanghai, discuss the rise of the modern music conservatory, and pay homage to the composer of the Chinese national anthem, visiting these sites and monuments along the way. Then we will visit two jazz and blues clubs that have paved the way for a jazz and blues scene in Shanghai: the Cotton Club and the JZ Club.

Andrew Field is an independent scholar of Chinese history and culture living and working in Shanghai. Andrew is the author of “Shanghai's Dancing World: Cabaret Culture and Urban Politics, 1919-1954” (2010). He is a specialized and passionate expert on the topics of ballroom dancing, jazz and indie music.

It was built in 1557, as protection from raids by Japanese pirates during the Ming Dynasty. Neishidi Residence is the former home of the Soong family. Historical records show that Soong Ching-ling, Soong Tzu-wen and Soong Mei-ling were born in Chuansha after their father returned from missionary work in 1890. It was also the former residence of scores of renowned Chinese figures.
