Sinan Lu: Three Historic Houses
Date: Wednesday, September 15
Time: 10:15am registration; tour begins at 10:30am
Venue: Sinan Lu at Nanchang Lu (southwest corner by the shop that sells "peasant" paintings)
Cost: RMB 200
Sinan Lu was home to some of Shanghai's most luminary figures in politics and the arts. We'll begin our walk with a brief introduction to the history of these personalities which include Zhou En Lai, Mei Lan Fang and Sun Yet Sen.
During our walk, we'll enter the former residence of revolutionary politician Zhou En Lai. The son of wealthy, well-educated parents, Zhou En Lai was the first Premier of the People's Republic of China and was instrumental in the Communist Party's rise to power and its restructuring of Chinese society. Though the house and its beautiful garden display the Western influence in early 1900's Shanghai, the spartan interior shows true commitment to the people's cause. China's first pop star, the 1920's Mei Lan Fang was unquestionably the most glamorous Peking Opera star in the world; indeed, such was his fame that he even had a brand of cigarettes named after him. Nor was his star appeal limited to the Chinese-it was said to be de rigeur for foreigners to see four things when they came to China: the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall and a performance by Mei Lan Fang. Sun Yat Sen's house, around the corner at 7 Xiangshan Lu, was built in the early 20th century. Sun Yat Sen and his wife, Soong Qingling, lived here between 1918 and 1924 during which time he produced one of his most important works-The Doctrines of Sun Wen.

In April 1849, the French Consul to Shanghai, Charles de Montigny, obtained a proclamation from the Governor of Shanghai which conceded certain territory for a French settlement.During the 1920s,this settlement, the French Concession, was developed into the premiere residential area of Shanghai.Avenue Petain, now Hengshan Lu, was a major boulevard linking Xujiahui with the center of the French Concession and represented the pinnacle of the settlement's high-end residential district. This Southwest corner of the Old French Concession-one of the last parts of the pre-WWII city to be developed-boasts many luxurious single-family homes and stately tower residences along its tree-lined streets.Today, much of the area maintains a sense of solitude, somewhat removed from the rest of the city.Today's walk will focus on the history and architecture of this area

Afterwards, we will move on to visit two bronze casting workshops. Here, we will get a chance to see how sculptures are made-ranging from the molds used for casting small sculptures to the production of huge sculptures for internationally acclaimed artists. We owe much of the sensibility of contemporary design to the Chinese tradition of cultural refinement and their understanding of nature.Chinese style is so accessible to us here in Shanghai and Spencer's background in architecture and his experience in furniture design makes him an excellent speaker on this topic. Following Spencer's interesting talk will be this delicious 3-course luncheon, with champagne, brought to you by Chef de Cuisine Florence Dalia from France and Sous Chef Cara Stadler from Australia.
