Understanding Modern China
Enjoy a lively discussion with three Chinese young women and gain an understanding of modern China. Born in different provinces, all of these women travelled abroad for higher education and then returned to China. One started a tea business, while another followed her heart to open a belly-dance studio. The third woman shared life story as a TED speaker. Gathering in a typical Shanghai lilong house built in 1934, we will learn about these Chinese women's dreams, values, concerns, as well as pressure from their families. This is a unique opportunity to discover and discuss issues ranging from legal rights of women in China to tips of starting a business locally.

with Spencer Dodington
As residents of Shanghai, we know the city has bold plans for the future. What better place to see the old versus the new than this museum in People's Square. Shanghai has every reason to be proud of its architectural heritage. Not only does the city hold some of the best early 20th century architecture in Asia, but urban development since 1992 has been nothing short of spectacular. Befittingly, Shanghai's leaders have built one of the most comprehensive museums dedicated to explaining the city's growth and existing architecture. Guide Spencer Dodington will use the exhibits to explain Shanghai's history, explore its efforts at preservation, and finally, catch a glimpse of what Shanghai will become in the next fifteen years.
